Is Antidepressants (SSRIs - Prozac, Zoloft) toxic to dogs or cats?

SSRIs and SNRIs can cause serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening overload of serotonin marked by tremors, agitation, a high heart rate, overheating and seizures. Signs in dogs can begin around 10 mg/kg of sertraline, though lower exposures sometimes just cause sedation. Fluoxetine is FDA-approved for dogs (Reconcile) at specific doses, but accidental ingestion of human-strength tablets is dangerous.

Toxicity is dose-dependent. Your dog's weight and the quantity consumed are both important - include these when you call poison control.

Cats are also at risk of serotonin syndrome. The same signs apply. Even a single dropped tablet can be significant for a small cat.
