All parts of the sago palm are highly toxic, but the seeds are the most dangerous. As few as one or two seeds can be fatal. Cycasin causes acute liver failure. The sago palm is a popular ornamental plant in warm-climate gardens and increasingly common as a houseplant.

Onset

15 minutes for GI symptoms; liver failure 2-3 days

Symptoms

  • - black tarry stools
  • - bruising
  • - liver failure
  • - coagulopathy
  • - death

What to do now

CRITICAL EMERGENCY. Rush to an emergency vet immediately. Do not wait. Survival rates drop sharply with delayed treatment. Call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) while in transit.
