TOXICChocolate and dogs
Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate cause toxicity. Baking chocolate and dark chocolate contain far higher concentrations than milk or white chocolate. As little as 1 oz dark chocolate per pound of body weight can be fatal.
Onset
6-12 hours
Symptoms
- - vomiting
- - diarrhoea
- - restlessness
- - excessive urination
- - muscle tremors
- - seizures
- - heart arrhythmias
What to do now
If your dog ate chocolate, call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately. Do not wait for symptoms. Treatment is most effective within 2 hours of ingestion.
Toxicity is dose-dependent. Your dog's weight and the quantity consumed are both important - include these when you call poison control.
Chocolate and cats
Cats are less likely to seek out chocolate than dogs, but theobromine toxicity is equally severe. Cats lack the sweet taste receptor, reducing incidental ingestion, but chocolate left accessible can still cause poisoning.

Call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) or your vet immediately. Bring the chocolate packaging if possible - the cocoa percentage matters for dose calculation.
